# Server Edition

ExpanDrive Server Edition runs ExpanDrive as a system service for unattended or headless Windows and Linux installations. It supports Intel-based x86 and x86\_64 systems.

You can mount a drive for all users of the system, including system processes. On Windows, you can also re-share cloud storage via SMB on the network, making your drives available to other users.

Server instances are controlled from the Server Edition area of the [ExpanDrive Website](/expandrive-website.md). From there, you can download the installers, retrieve the server token, monitor active instances, and deactivate instances you no longer need. Each account supports up to four active server instances.

ExpanDrive Server Edition requires a current [paid license](/pricing-and-licenses.md). It is not available or supported with a Free license.

## Server Operation

[Server Installation](/server-edition/server-installation.md) covers Windows and Linux packages. [Server Configuration](/server-edition/server-configuration.md) covers activation, remote access to the local configuration interface, connections, and Windows-specific mount options. [Command-Line Interface](/server-edition/command-line-interface.md) lists the supported `exfs` commands for activation, mount control, foreground operation, and synchronous writes.

Server Edition does not update itself automatically. Upgrade it by installing a newer MSI, DEB, or RPM package as described under [Server Installation](/server-edition/server-installation.md#server-updates).

## Legacy Licenses for ExpanDrive Server Edition

Lifetime or perpetual licenses sold by the prior owner apply only to ExpanDrive Server Edition versions labeled 2023 or earlier. The current ExpanDrive team does not distribute those installers or provide technical support for them, and the prior owner is no longer involved with ExpanDrive.
